UK Safer Internet Centre public report released

Published:  Tue 5 Mar 2019

The IWF is one of three leading charities which make up the UKSIC alongside Childnet International and South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL). We work together in our capacities as a hotline, awareness centre and helpline to make the internet safer and to support young people, parents and professionals in the UK and around the world. UKSIC is co-funded by the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility.

The report highlights the progress and achievements the Centre has made in making the internet a better and safer place for all. Since July 2016, our team of world-class analysts in the Hotline has received 413,649 reports from the public and removed 213,366 URLs of criminal child sexual abuse material. At the end of this period, our Hotline team had also hashed nearly 343,000 images. A ‘hash’ is a unique code that is generated from the data in an image, like a digital fingerprint. Our Image Hash List includes all these individual codes for known images of child sexual abuse and prevents online distribution, the re-victimisation of children and even stops images from being uploaded in the first place.
