Audits and inspections

Audits and inspections

Quality assurance is naturally important to all organisations, but here at the IWF it’s vital. First and foremost, we want to assure victims of child sexual abuse that the assessments made by our analysts are and continue to be, world-leading. But we also want to continue to maintain the high standards we have set across the board for the charity. Key to this is being regularly and independently audited and inspected by appropriate personnel and authorities.

The Hotline

Our Hotline systems; assessments, security measures and day to day processes are inspected in a variety of ways:

 •    We have a small but dedicated team of Quality Assurance Officers who act as ‘critical friends’ to the Hotline. They sample the work and assessments of the team every day to ensure accuracy and aid development.

•    The Hotline is independently inspected every two years by a team of law enforcement, forensic and academic professionals led by an esteemed retired High Court Judge. The most recent of these inspections found the IWF to be compliant with best practice standard. You can also read the previous inspection here.

•    As a member of INHOPE we are also subject to their review. Our most recent audit by the INHOPE team was carried out in September 2018 and it was reported that the IWF ‘maintains exceptional standards in all areas and its practices can be recommended to new or existing hotlines wishing to develop or expand their services’.

The IWF charity

The IWF has been an ISO 27001 certified charity for a number of years now. This is further evidence of our commitment to the security of the information and technology we’re harnessing in our fight against online child sexual abuse imagery. To maintain this certification, we are externally audited annually and carry out regular internal audits throughout the year.

Our policies, strategies and procedures are compliant with company law and charity commission regulations.

Our financial accounts are audited annually and are published within our Trustees’ Report and Financial Statements – the most recent of which can be found here.

Relevant policies; minutes of our Board meetings, details of our Trustees and senior staff, our funders, accounts, details of companies that receive the IWF URL list and our complaints procedures are also available on our website.

It is our aim that the varied blend of internal and external inspection that the IWF is subject to provides the public; our stakeholders and funders, and most importantly the victims with the reassurance that we set a high bar for quality and are constantly striving for operational excellence.
